We made a choice when we started Backbone — we were going to be straight with you about everything that goes into our products. No vague claims. No greenwashing. Just honest ingredients and honest reasoning.

Soy Wax — Our Wax Melts

We use a natural soy wax blend in all our wax melts. Soy is a renewable American crop — most of it grown right here in the Midwest. It melts cleanly and evenly, releases fragrance steadily, and doesn't leave residue behind. It was the right call and an easy one.

Coconut-Soy Wax — Our Candles

Our candles use a coconut-soy wax blend. Coconut wax brings stronger fragrance throw and better glass adhesion. Combined with soy it gives us a clean, consistent burn that performs the way a candle should. No paraffin. No fillers.

Fragrance Oils

Some of our fragrance oils do contain essential oils as part of their composition — when they do, we note it right on the product. Some fragrances also contain vanillin, a naturally occurring compound responsible for warm, sweet, vanilla-forward scents. We track vanillin content on every fragrance and factor it into how we formulate each product. Every fragrance oil we use is phthalate-free. We don't cut corners on what goes into our wax — and we don't pretend our products are something they're not.

Where We Source

We buy from small businesses first. Iowa suppliers when we can find them, Midwest when we can't, regional when that's the best option available. Our wax comes from right here in Iowa. Most of our fragrance oils come from small suppliers in Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota.

We're not the cheapest option. We're not trying to be. We're trying to do it right.
