Autumn Trail

There are maybe three weekends a year when everything lines up just right.

The temperature is exactly where it should be — cool enough for a jacket but not cold enough to matter. The trail is empty because most people couldn't be bothered. The leaves came down last week and they're still where they fell, covering the path in something that feels less like litter and more like the whole woods deciding to sit still for a while. You're not going anywhere in particular. That's the point.

The air smells like this — Golden Delicious apple coming off somewhere nearby, bright and clean without trying. Lavender moves through it in the middle, not floral, just that particular October quality that lives in outdoor air for about three weeks before it's gone. Pink peppercorn adds a quiet warmth underneath it, just enough to remind you that you're moving. And then the trail itself comes up through it all — red mahogany wood and cedar rising from the ground, dry and honest, the smell of somewhere that's been here long before you showed up and will be here long after.
